The Heart of the Matter

Hawthorn

Hawthorn – Crataegus oxyacantha

Professor Michael Oliver, a former leading heart specialist, has said that millions of healthy older people are being prescribed drugs that they don’t need, due to the way GPs are paid and the way the Health Service Guidelines encourage the use of drugs for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.

In the British Medical Journal online, Professor Oliver, who was professor emeritus of cardiology at the University of Edinburgh, said that the side effects of these drugs are being overlooked in a surge of preventative prescribing.

‘What kind of medicine is this?’ he asked. ‘It is politics taking preference over professionalism, obsession with government targets superseding common sense, paternalism replacing personal advice.’ Prescribing a drug is easier than listening and understanding. Weight loss, exercise and dietary changes would in many cases be more effective and far safer than adding endlessly to a regimen of medication.

Hurray for some common sense. And, let us add, there are many safe and effective options for preventing or tackling common health problems, such as Cynara for cholesterol or Crataegus [picture] for high blood pressure.

Organic Black Seed Oil – Nigella Sativa

For over two thousand years the black seed (Nigella sativa), a plant from the Ranunculaceae (buttercup) family, has been traditionally used by various cultures throughout the world as a food and in health and general wellbeing.

The ancient Egyptians knew and used the black seed. Tutankhamun is even believed to have had a bottle of black seed oil in his tomb – and that would have been organic of course!

Black Cumin Nigella seeds and oil

Nigella sativa originates from Western Asia and is a herb that grows about 16-24 inches in height and has white flowers when in bloom. The plant is now cultivated from the Near East to India, though the most highly regarded black seed oil comes from Egypt.

Also known as the Blessed Seed, black seed is popular in the Middle and Far East. With a pleasant aroma and taste, it can be taken internally off the spoon, used as part of a salad dressing or used as a head or chest rub.

Organic standards ensure that the black cumin seeds in our Black Seed Oil are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides of other chemical sprays.
