Candida albicans – Yeast fungus

Candida albicans lives naturally in and on your body. Candida is a type of beneficial yeast fungus, that is typically found in small amounts on your mouth, skin and in your intestines.

Healthy bacteria in your body control the balance of Candida. When Candida albicans is off-balance, the yeast overgrows and causes an infection called candidiasis (too much yeast in the body). Symptoms vary from bloating to itching, along with fatigue and generally feeling unwell.

The shift towards natural medicine

Modern, western medicine has undoubtedly made incredible contributions to science and learning. Many of the scores of metabolic pathways that facilitate the normal function of our neurological, immune and endocrine (hormonal) systems have been elucidated by research funded by drug companies.

They have also invested heavily into one of the greatest scientific endeavours yet to be undertaken: the unravelling of the human genetic code. But their rewards have been few and far between.

natural medicine turn up the beat

The biggest reason for this is linked to our evolution with our natural environment and the fact that these connected and interacting pathways respond best to natural inputs, such as healthy, diverse diets, fresh air and clean water, and plenty of physical activity.

Sounds pretty natural, doesn’t it? ..  and a far cry from the 💊 ‘pill for an ill’ approach that has characterised modern medicine.

Herbal remedies for Catarrh

BUNGED-UP?

Catarrh can be a problem at any time of year but it’s even more common in the winter when colds and flu are about. Catarrh is a reaction to irritation of the mucous membranes in the nasal passages. This could be caused by an allergic reaction to something in the environment, in the diet, or chemical pollutants in the home, as well as the after effect of a winter bug.

Which herb can help?

Plantago is a very common unspectacular herb to look at found in fields and meadows throughout Europe but its ordinary appearance disguises its value as a medicinal herb. In Gaelic the herb is known as “the healing plant”. Some know it as “soldiers”.

Plantain juice will NOT go mouldy during storage. This is due to the presence of naturally occurring antibiotics.

Plantago contains mucilage, tannins and silicic acid. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, astringent and demulcent properties. As well as being a great catarrh buster, Plantago can also be helpful with sinusitis, ear infections and coughs.
