Saw Palmetto is considered by herbalists to be the prime remedy for prostate problems. Sabal serrulata or Serenoa repens is a small palm with fan-shaped leaves. The fruits are dark red and used medicinally.
USES: Enlarged prostate, Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH).
HOW IT WORKS: The condition of an enlarged prostate is commonly found in men over the age of 50. This enlargement is the result of the cells in the prostate becoming more sensitive to circulating hormonal levels in the body. Cells of the prostate enlarge, which in turn cause the whole gland to increase in size.
Published studies on Saw Palmetto support the traditional use of Saw Palmetto capsules. The oil rich berries of the Saw Palmetto contain the active ingredients that make the herb so effective in the treatment of BPH. This is a local effect, confined to the prostate gland.
The berries reduce the sensitivity of prostate cells to the hormone, di-hydrotestosterone (DHT). If DHT is over-produced, the prostate gland increases in size. The oil also helps to reduce swelling and inflammation, relieving pressure on the bladder. It takes the oil from four berries to make just one 320mg capsule, the recommended daily dose.
